2 x Coneys with everything (onions, chili, cheese), $1.50 ea

I had been really disappointed by the Cincinnati hot dog on our visit here last November. But our host Mark assured us that Skyline was a world apart from Gold Star. In fact, Mark went as far as to call Skyline his “favorite food” and told us that his girlfriend once worked there and during that time period, he was a very happy man. So we decided to give Cincinnati dogs another shot after hearing promises involving cinnamon and chocolate chili.

Skyline turned out to be the jewel of this midwestern venture. I ordered two Coneys that came piled with about 2 inches of shredded cheese. The cheese was maybe a bit on the excessive side, so I only used about half of it, but it suited the dog really well. I can’t think of the last time I had cheese on a hot dog and enjoyed it, but here it fit right in. It wouldn’t have been the same without it. The chili lived up to the hype, with a robust flavor profile that put Gold Star to shame. Oh yeah, and we got like 6 hot dogs for maybe $9. Even though they’re really only about 2/3 the size of a normal dog, I think it’s still a pretty good deal.

With all this traveling, I’ve been developing a list in my head, and whenever I hear someone is going to City X, I’ll tell them where to eat a hot dog. Cincinnati is now pretty well represented on the list.
